Just received an email from Alexis Oviedo, my cuban chofer. I have met him during my errands in La Habana, frente al Capitolio, fifteen years ago. His car is a very old Moskvitch of the early 80s, yellow, He got it as a gift-opportunity from the Govt being a Veteran of Angolan war. I post a similar one in the picture. His own is not that good but always working, with a bit of good luck He can eventually change it for a newer and better one.
We made an instant friendship, easy with cubans actually, but with Him was different.
He is, althrough expensive, extremely loyal, precise, careful, educated, good mannered, an ex soldier like myself. With a wonderful dark sense of humour.
Originally from Camaguey province, He lives now in La Corea, a suburban area of the Capital. I had even lunch into his parent’s house in Camaguey. His father drives an horse coach to transport people, a very good family.
The horse knew perfectly the route, el recorrido, and well behaved always to get an extra portion of “miel de pulgas”, a subproduct of sugarcane extraction given to animals, horses mainly, for strength.
We had many adventures together all around the Island during many years.
We visited many religious leaders, went to remote places, from Cabo San Antonio to Punta de Maisí. Buscando remedios…
It is truly pleasant, in a rainy autumn sunday, that one is remembered and appreciated.
Cuba gave me a lot, I owe a lot to that Country, especially my most beautiful experiences as ethnologyst and as human being.
If you are interested into hiring a reliable taxi driver for visiting the Pearl of the Caribbean please let me know and I will forward you His email.
